Hickory House Barbeque Sapulpa Oklahoma

Yesterday evening as I was heading home I happen to be passing through Sapulpa Oklahoma.  I was passing through about 8pm in the evening.  When I happen to come across the sign for Hickory House Barbeque.  I went ahead and stopped as I was getting out of my car I caught the smell of the food, the smell was enchanting.

I happened to see only a few cars in the parking lot which for a Barbeque place typically is not a good sign but  I went on it.  The cashier asked me if I was eating in.  I advised I was, so she had me take a seat where ever I wanted.

I sat near the front on the plus was not to bad however it ended up by the restroom.  Apparently every evening they have a buffett for $12.95 I am a firm believer that the buffett style of food is never the best.  It seems to be more bland than the menu food and often because they make the amounts they do it never seems to taste as good.

After I sat down my waitress Christine took my drink order and asked me if I wanted the buffett.  I advised her that I did not that instead I wanted the Barbeque Bologna sandwich with a side of beans.  She took my order and off she went.  She stayed bus cleaning however that ment she wasnt up for chatting which IMO is part of the dining experience friendly staff.

I got the food in about 7 or 8 minutes which is OK with me but apparently it had gotten out that there was a guy in a dress eating at their restaurant because I dont think there was a kitchen staff person who didnt stop to try to get something for me or just come out to take a peak.

The Bologna sandwich was good ordered it was sauce on it however they were kind of stingy with the sauce so the bologna was still dry in a few places.  The bologna was missing some flavor which is why sauce is always good, however there was was pretty good it was not great but it was pretty good.

The beans tasted like they tried to spice up baked beans and it didnt work out so well.   They were fine but not great and a disappoinment compared to the spell of their barbeque and the taste of the bologna.

Overall the food was not to bad it left something to be desired however I was able to get out of the restaurant for less than $9 so not to bad either.  If you are in Sapupla it may be worth the stop.

Morrison Cafe

Earlier this week I happened to end up in Stillwater Oklahoma for work.  On my way out of town I happened to pass by this little restaurant called the Morrison Cafe in Morrison Oklahoma.  It was about 10AM so I stopped by to get a bite to eat.

When I went in I noticed that there was only 1 other couple in the restaurant so I sat at a table across from them.  The waitress was moderately friendly but you could tell she would have rather been doing something else than helping me.

I started off with a glass of Ice Tea, as cold as it was that morning I definitely should have started with some coffee but went with some tea just the same. The tea was unsweet they had both but  I decided to stick with the unsweet it was refreshing and the flavor was not to bad.

I order 2 eggs over medium and an order of bacon.  I had to only wait about 5 minutes and my meal was delivered the eggs were alittle more runny than I like but overall they were not to bad.  The bacon was crispy not burnt just crispy and it was OK as well.

I started getting cold in the restaurant apparently the restaurant was well heated.  I went ahead and ordered a cup of coffee.   The waitress brought it to me in a to go cup apparently she was ready for me to go.  I advised that was not needed so I sat down and started drinking my coffee I attempted to make small talk but she was more interested in seeing me leave than being chatty.

The only plus for the entire meal was that I got out of there for less than $6 for breakfast which is very reasonable.  If you happen to be in Morrison and dont want to spend alot of money and get average to good food the Morrison Cafe maybe the spot for you.

Lady and Sons Savannah GA

It would have been impossible to be in Savannah and not eat at Paula Deans restaurant so why I was in Savannah I did just that.  I went through Savannah I decided to have dinner at Lady and Sons in Savannah.  I got there around 8 pm and they had just finished their dinner rush so their was some seating available.

The server sent me up to the 3rd floor to eat.  The third floor had about 30 people in it so for the most part it was empty.  I was sat near the bar.  The waiter was kind, you could tell he would have wrather seated someone else but was good at his job anyway. and asked what  I wanted to drink I ordered the sweet tea.  and When the sweet tea came back he asked me what I wanted for dinner I asked for recomenndations.  He suggested their dinner buffet with fried chicken and all the fixings so that is what I ordered.

I started out with their salad bar it was ok but it didnt have all the items I thought it should have mostly because the table was relatively small.

The buffect table was bigger but other than fried chicken and catfish it had only about 4 vegatables and rolls on it.  Which was OK but not enought selection for what the buffet cost.

After sitting down my tea was there and my dinner rolls which were delicious.  The chicken was cooked correctly it was not overcook and it still had lots of flavor despite being fried.  I had 4 pieces of chicken total and 2 rounds of sides the sides were mash potatos which were good and corn which tasted like it came from the can.

After dinner the waiter brought me my dessert which was the ooy gooey butter cake which was delicious.  The perfect finish to the meal.

When I got up to leave I went to ask where the bathroom was but my waiter couldnt be found.  I found it by accident and away I went

The meal was good overall but I expect more variety for $20 per person  I expected better more attentive service

Skull Creek Boathouse

While in Hilton Head South Carolina I got a change to eat at the Skull Creek Boathouse. As it was 6pm and close to dinner time so the place was packed. I took a number as they stated it would be a 45 minute - 1 hour wait. I asked where a good place to wait was and they advised that down by the channel there is an outdoor bar.

However, being there were people already drunk at 6 pm they wanted to take my picture, which I am usually not OK with. While I was at the bar the two female bar tenders asked me what I wanted I ordered a reds apple ale I wished I had ordered one of their mixed drinks are seeing them but a Redds is what I ordered.

Jennifer was one of the bartenders names took my order I asked her if I could order off the menu she said I could  I asked for a recommendation and was recommended the Sevechie. I ordered the tropical sevechie.

While waiting on my food I ordered another Redds however like I said previously if you go order the mixed drinks that look great.  i had guests come and go as I was sitting at the bar there was a nice couple from Virginia the beltway area and a drunk fisherman.  All were pleasant.  When the sevechie arrived it was delicous.  I dont like seafood but it tasted like a fish had died from fruit overdose.  It came with tortilla chips they would have been better had they been warmed up.  As I was finishing my meal.  One of the locals decided to sit next to me and chat me up wow he was  drunk. We chatted for 45 minutes while I was eating and exchanged random conversations. He explained he was a fishing captain and took people out on his boat to go fishing. Tried to get me to go out but because I did not know him and was only there for 1 day I declined he swindled me into buying him a beer which was fine because his company was worth the price of the beer.

The bartenders were busy but not real chatting I minded my business and they theirs, if I needed something they would be quick but I wish they had been more friendly.  As I was getting ready to leave I asked Ashley the other bartender where the restroom was she advised me I asked which one they would prefer I use she stated she didnt care and should probably use the womens.  The line in the womens room was long but they had another restroom so I went and used it.  Overall good experience if you are in Hilton Head The Skull Creek Boathouse is defintely reccomended

The Helen House Helen Georgia

On my recent trip to Georgia I visited my cousin and her new baby in Gaineville.  I had received some advice from her on where to eat if  I happen to be in the area she told me I really needed to visit Helen Georgia.  So I got up on a Monday morning and headed over to Helen Georgia, it is about 30 minutes to from her house just north of Gaineville.  I have got up that morning and it appeared to be a scorcher so I went ahead and wore a sundress.  The drive is a lovely drive and leaving driving through the Blue Ridge Mountains is absolutely beautiful.  However, Helen is like an old Bavarian community and it really beautiful and unique.  On my way through town it was about 10:30 I was getting hungry and there didnt appear to be that many places to eat.  However, I noticed a plae called The Helen House that appeared to be open so I stopped in to try some of their food.  It was difficult to find their parking lot so I parked next door and went on in.

When you walk in it looked like a smalll mom and pop diner  nothing to special however the smell was devine.  The hostest asked me where I wanted to be seated.  I decided on the patio as it was still moderately cool outside.  They obligued.  My waitress was from New York and had moved to Helen with her husband because they fell in love with the community.  I understand why.

I asked them about their daly special and she let me know that their breakfast special was 2 eggs, 2 sausage, 2 bacon, and 2 pancakes.  That sounded like plenty of food so I ordered it.

While waiting I ordered a cup of coffee to start and a sweet tea to follow.  The coffee was good it wasnt great as I still added creamer but it was good.  The sweat tea was alittle sweet but overall good.

No sooner did I finish my first cup of coffee then my food was ready.  The smell was overwhleming and delicious.  The eggs were perfect just right not to runny.  The sausage and bacon were good they had enough flavor and required no seasoning.  The syrup was warm so it ran over the pancakes just right.

I chatted up the waitress she was friendly I asked her about things to do and she gave me a list and provided a map however very helpful

Hooters Duluth Georgia

One of the problems with arriving late into a city is attempting to find a place to eat.  When I flew into Atlanta I ran into such a problem. I wore the short blue dress I spoke about earlier that I wore in Kansas, it is short but it keeps you very cool and in the Georgia heat, cool is appreciated.   I flew into Atlanta arriving there at 9pm on a Sunday evening and as I headed over to my hotel which was in Gaineville GA, I was getting alittle hungry.  Subsequently I stopped to get something to eat I stopped in this mall area with what looked like a string of restaurants right off of I85.  However, it turned out that most were fast food and the ones that werent had a line.  So I ended up eating a Hooters.  A restaurant known for their service but not so much for their food.

Coming into the restaurant the bar was alittle full so I asked to be seated in the restaurant no need to draw unwanted attention.  My hostest Amber was pleseant and seated me quickly.  However, my waitress Jennifer took longer to get to me and you could tell she was not eager to help.  I ordered a smothered chicken sandwich.  I asked for a recommendation and Jennifer offered that I order hot wings not a food I was especially looking forward to eating.  So I went ahead and orderd the chicken sandwich.  I then asked for the directions and advice on the restroom which she gave and away I went when I had ame back i sat for a alittle while and tried to make small talk however Jennifer had no interest in talking to me and she kept sitting at another table with some drunk guys in their 20s.

My sandwich finall arrived that I ordered and the waitress quickly left me to my food.  The food was okay but once againt I think most of their food is okay rarely is it great occasionally it is bacd.  However, the service was dismal.  The only upside was the hostest was friendly and chatty.

Meehans Public House Atlanta

My job sent me to Atlanta Georgia and I got the opportunity to taste some good cuisine.

From of the places was Meehans Public House.  I went these on a Wednesday night and it was packed even for a Wednesday.  I was dressed semi formal as I went to eat after a meeting.  It took a while to be seated and once I was seated  I ignored often.  I did ordered the fried pickles as an appetizer I subsequently ordered the Steak medium well.

The friend pickels were a let down especially after they explained that were brought in frozen and were not fresh.  What a let down.

The steak came with a salad but I ordered the house dressing which was a vingarette which was delicous.

When the steak finally came I was losing my appetite.  I went ahead and eat, the steak was tender I did not need to add any sauce for flavor.

Overall the crowds and the poor customer service put a damper on the food

Food B+ to A-

Overall Good food but crummy service I dont know if  I would go back.

Goodwinds Sea Food Hateras Island

My job sent me to North Carolina and I got the opportunity to visit the Outerbanks and upon the reccomendation of a local I decided to eat at Goodwind's Seafood in Avon.

Upon entering I was seated almost immediately and my waitress Brittany asked if I wanted an appetizer however I did not.  and away she went we brought me sweet tea as I ordered and subsequently ordered my food they daily special was as Chicken Asian Noodle Bowl.  I could tell that I was a curiosity to the waitress. She was polite but I could tell she wanted to ask me something So I went ahead and asked her if I could help her as she seemed curious and sat down across the table.  She asked if she could ask me a personal question. I was like I know green isnt my color. She was laughing and I said is that it. She proceeded to ask me why I liked dressing the way I do and explained to her I enjoyed it. She asked me if I wore just a dress or other womens clothes and I asked what she ment. She said I can assume you are wearing a bra I agreed in the affirmative. Then she asked if I wore panties, I told her I get asked that alot. I told her why was she curious about panties, she explained the room difference. I asked her if she thought I did. She answered that she assumed that because I wore dresses and bras I probably wore panties. I told her that is correct I do wear panties. I was like wouldnt that look weared if I was wearing a dress and bra and boxers, she stated that she thought it would but thought she would ask. she asked me if I had a kind I preferred I told her I liked hipsters and hi cut. So she was like no thongs and I said no thongs they are really uncomfortable.

She got up and brought me my Asian Bowl the food was good but not what I expected.  I had finally asked her to use the restroom she asked me which one I wanted to use I told her I didnt care whichever caused the least trouble she told me where it was and so I went.

Primos Italian Restaurant

After a rough day at work I didnt feel like cooking so I decided to go out to dinner.  I settled on Primo's Italian Restaurant in OKC.  I got their around 8pm to wasnt overally busy so I thought I may have pick the wrong place.  I ordered the Asiago spinach pasta with a Caesar salad to start.

The customer service expereince was above par compared to the other customer service experiences I have had this year.  My drink never went dry and my waitress was always helpful.

The caesar salad came out first as it should have.  It had just enough dressing but it was covered in it.  The bread was alittle small but I got refills.

I finished the salad just in time for the Asiago spinach pasta.  It was delicious the was enough sauce that it didnt smother the flavor.  There was enough chicken so that there was chicken in every bite.

Overall I give Primos an A the food was good the service was good and the total experience was a positive one.

Charlestons - Edmond

After one of the ladies I worked with advised me that her son worked at Charlestons and I had her about how great their soup was I decided to give them a try.  Last friday evening I decided to visit Charlestons in Edmond Oklahoma.  As I visited close to 9 pm the restaurant was relatively empy with maybe 15 or 20 people dining in it.

Upon being seated I was advised my server was going to be K* so I was sitting ther about 5 minutes when she came over for my drink order.  She was nice but you could tell she was tired and annoyed having to work this late.  She talked me into trying the spinach artichoke dip.

In addition to the spinach artichoke dip I ordered the french dip.

The spinach dip came out within 10 minutes of ordering it so while it was not quickly I didnt wait forever for it.  The dip was delicious.  You could taste the spinach, artichoke, and cheese and not one of the flavors overshadowed the other flavors.  The chips were just thin enough.

Between my appetized and meal my waitress handed me off to another waiter.  He was friendly but he was busy as he was preparing to close while we were in there.

Half way through my dip the french dip showed up with creamy horseradish dressing.  The meat on the dip appeared to be be more of a chopped meat like chopped brisket than sliced meat.  The meat kept calling out of the sandwich

After my sandwhich the waiter asked me for dessert even though I didnt finish my meal, I respectfully declined.

My check came out quickly and I paid and attempted to leave.  On my way out I tried to find the restroom however I was unable to do so.  I walked by a waitress chatting with a fellow worker.  I tried to get her to tell me however she was ignoring me.  Finally my waiter advised me where it was so I went on in to the restroom.

Overall the experience was a good experience it could have went better or worse but I would defintely go back.

Hollies Flatiron Steakhouse

Being out and about last Friday I found myself eating at Hollies Flatiron Steakhouse in Moore Oklahoma.  Getting there are 9 pm there were not alot of people there, therefore I was seating quickly.  However, it took quite awhile to get me drink order.  Once the service started though the food was brought out swiftly.

I ordered the Flat Iron Steak I ordered it medium.  It came with caesar salad.  There casaer was not a regular caesar salad but more like a spicy caesar.  It was a unique twist on salads.  The salad had just enough dressing so overall it was tasty.

Before my salad was finished my steak came out.  It was cooked true to medium.  The steak came with a choise of sides however I stuck with the vegatable of the day which was a pan fried green breans with chunks of bacon in them. The green beans were delicious no complaints and the steak marinade was enough to offer it flavor but not enough to drowned out the steak.

Overall the service was average  I did not get treated poorly because of how I was dressed however the server could have been more attentive.  Normally when I visit restaurants and need to go to the restroom I use the one with the least amount of trouble that is why I ask before going in. The wait staff advised to use whichever I was the most comfortable using.

Overall the expierence was a positve one if I had to grade it  I would give it a A-

Saltgrass Steakhouse

Last friday I decided to do alittle shopping while out adn about I stopped by the Salt Grass steakhouse for dinner.  Upon arriving the server took her time to seat me she wanted me to sit at the bar however I wanted to sit at a table.

After being seated it took the waiter 10 minutes to get my drink order.  After my drink arrived I ordered the Prime Rib.

The prime rib came with a salad I chose the ceasar salad.  The ceaser salad was ok.  It was nothing spectacular.  It had an adequate amount of dressing and the lettuce was still crisp.  The dressing was generic so it was OK.

When the prime rid came the only adavantage it had going for it was that it was warm I was obviosuly cooked earlier in the day then re-heated.

The service was hospitalable however could have been a whole lot better.  It took them 20 minutes to let me know where the bathroom was after I came up and asked them.

If any of my followers have any suggestions in the OKC area they want me to visit please let me know.

Blues Family Dining Winfield Kansas

On friday I headed up to Kansas to see my cousins new baby.  On my way I stopped in Winfield Kansas at the Blues Family Dinning.

The outside is not much to look at but going inside it was packed I ended up being seated by myself.

The server ended up checking with her boss before serving me as she was not sure if she was suppose to.

With the exception of the occasional stare the dining expereince was a postive one.

They were out of the catfish special so the waitress talked me into trying the hot roast beef sandwich.  I am glad I did it was fast and good.

The beef was alittle over cooked however the gravery covered the taste the potatoes were and smooth but they lacked flavor.

Overall the food was quick and tasty and when you want to stop someplace for a quick bit to eat that will work.

Spaghetti Warehouse

Last friday after work I was craving spaghetti I had heard good things about the spaghetti warehouse so I decided to give it a try.  I went in the restaurant around 9:00PM the place was empty I was one of 4 customers in the restaurant which is never a good sign.  I went ahead and got seated the couple sitting across from me were taken aback however by this time I am used to it.

The waitress explained they had been pretty dead I went ahead and started out with their Caesar Salad.  Before the salad could come out they brought me some bread and butter the bread of mildly warm however the butter made the bread taste better.

The waitress would have wrather waited on someone else and it showed in her service.  My tea glass went empty 3 times and the last time it was empty for over 5 minutes this is unacceptable for an empty restaurant.

I ordered their house special the spaghetti with meatballs.  The sauce had a slight flavor however the meatballs had a good flavor but overall the food was good not great but good.  Later she asked if I would like desert I asked which was homemade only the brownies were made their everything was brought it.  She was unsure where the tierra mi su came from.

The overall dining experience was average the service should have been better the sauce would be better with a dash of flavor

Deep Fork Grill

Last evening I got a hankering for some fine dining so I decided to give Deep Fork grill a try.  Deep fork Grill is a fine dinning restaurant in North OKC.  Upon arriving their around 9:30 there was not an abundance of people so that threw me off.  However, I went on in and got a table the waiter initially took a double take apparently they have never seen a man in a dress.  But I was seated, my waitress was moderately interested in assisting me.  She took my order I ordered the chicken and dumplings even though they had a wide variety of foods.  The I also ordered there salad with the house dressing.

I step away to the restroom, when I returned I had a slice of mozarella on a tomato covered in vinagrette sauce.  If was a tasty warm up to the salad.

Short after I finished the appetizer a different server brought me my salad.  When you see the salad it does not appear to have dressing however it does.  The dressing is basted on the salad.  The dressing enhanced the flavor of the salad without taking away the flavor of the dressing.

After I finished my salad the chicken and dumplings came out.  I was expecting a more traditional chicken and dumpling dish however I was served a modern approach to chicken in dumplings it was more like a chicken soup with fried dumplings on the side.  The dish had some robust flavor however it was lacking some original taste.  It tasted alot like chicken soup and not alot like chicken dumplings.

Overall the dining experience was OK they have a mild collection of wines however they do not have a Sangria.

Twin Peaks

I tried the Twin Peaks in West OKC, the beautiful women definitely offer some upside to eating their.  However, because there are scantily clad women it is by enlarge visited by men and Friday night was no different the restaurant was near full.  They have high tables and low tables I sit at a low table.

For an appetizer I ordered the fried pickels.  Fried pickles is one of my favorite appetizers and theirs is delicous.  They are made from scratch and are delicous for my main course I ordered the Mile High Club it was good it was bland as I am sure most of their clientel prefer bland food.

For a drink I had their Dirty Blond house beer they have it in two sizes Girl Size and Man Size. Girl Size is 16 ounces that is what I ordrer it came in a frosty mug with an orange it is buy enlarge it was a decent beer.  The service left something to be desired and most of the waitresses kept meeting around one table and shoot the beers with their regulars.  I usually dont mind as long as everyone else is being serviced.

The meal experience was pretty decent however the front door guy kept wanting to take my photo to show to the staff.

If you have any suggestions about my comments or places to try please let me know.

The Garage

I have never been to the Garage so I tried the one in Edmond.  Overall except the occasional stare the food was delcious and the dining experience was second to none.  The bar tender walk over to my table and asked if I wanted a drink I tried Angry Orchard boy I am glad I did it went perfect with my BBQ burger and order of fries. The BBQ burger had a sweet sauce to it that almost gave it a candy flaor the veggies were not so robust that they stole the flavor of the food.  The fries were hot fresh and tasty the things you want in fries they had flavor however still used alittle ketchup.

If you have any suggestions about my comments or places to try please let me know.

Hooters and then

My second day wearing a dress I had errands to do so I didnt feel like cooking and had a hankering for chicken wings.  I like Hooters chicken wings so that seemed like as good as place as any to go.  I went to the location in NW OKC.  As I entered the restaurant the bar tender made a big deal about me in a dress and not long after half the restaurant was starring and laughing.  So I asked for a table and the waitress advised me I was wearing a dress.  I told her I know so i asked her if it was to formal or what the problem was.  She once again stated the obvious your wearing a dress.  I told her I KNOW.  After I realized I was not going to be seated I went ahead and left.

I ended up at Cracker Barrell the cleaning crew stopped and giggled and made a big deal however I was still seated as they were not very busy I got my chicken and dumplings quickly the chicken and dumplings were tasty however my sides Mac and Cheese and Corn tasted re-heated and not that tasty at all.  In addition it took forever to get my check and as I was leaving the janitors kept trying to take photos of me.  Overall a less than stellar performance.

If you have any suggestions about my comments or places to try please let me know.

Welcome

Welcome to the Dresswearing Food Critique I am J I am your critique for this blog.   For new years resolution I have made three resolutions.  1. Run More 2. Be Kinder 3 Wear a dress everyday.  For some people wearing a dress is not that new or that big of a deal however for me as a guy it seems like it was a very big deal.  One of the first things I noticed when I started wearing dresses in restaraunts is that people treated me differently.  The service was different.  So I thought I could blog about my dining experiences.
